If you are planning a custom piece for a proposal, a birthday, or another date that matters, timing is one of the most important questions to ask early. At THE HOUSE OF ROYAL T, most custom pieces take 30–90 days. That range is wide because every piece is different. This guide explains where the time goes, what makes a piece faster or slower, and when rush options may be available.
Why custom takes time
A custom piece is designed around your idea and then hand-crafted. Nothing is pulled off a shelf. Each stage, from the first conversation to the finished piece, has its own work, and some stages depend on you: reviewing the design, choosing stones, or coming in for a fitting. Knowing the stages helps you plan.
The stages of a commission
1. Consultation
Everything starts with a private consultation at our appointment-only house at 234 Fayetteville St in downtown Raleigh. You share your idea, sketches, or reference photos, and we talk through materials, stones, and budget. If you have a date in mind, tell us here. It shapes everything that follows.
2. Design
Your $850 design deposit begins the design process. We create your design as a CAD visualization so you can see the piece before it is made. You review it and ask for changes, and we refine it until it is right. This is often where the timeline varies most: a clear idea may need few revisions, while a design that evolves takes longer to finalize. That time is well spent, because changes are far easier at this stage than after production begins.
3. Approval and timeline
Once you approve the design and your personalized quote, we confirm a clear timeline for your piece. From this point, the schedule is based on your actual design rather than an estimate.
4. Hand-crafting
Your piece is then hand-crafted. Setting stones, finishing surfaces, and checking every detail take care, and that work cannot be rushed without risking the result.
5. Fitting, delivery, or pickup
Some pieces need a fitting. Grillz, for example, are made from impressions of your teeth, and the fit is checked and adjusted where needed. When your piece is finished, delivery is complimentary, or you can pick it up in Raleigh.
What affects timing
- How quickly the design is settled. The number of revision rounds, and how quickly feedback comes back, is often the biggest variable.
- Complexity. A clean polished piece moves faster than one with detailed engraving, cut-outs, or many set stones.
- Stones. The type, number, and specific stones you choose can affect how long sourcing and setting take.
- Size and scope. A large pendant or a full set of grillz involves more work than a single ring or one tooth.
- Fittings. Pieces that need an in-person fitting depend on finding a time that works for you.
Can it be rushed?
Sometimes. Rush options may be available depending on the project. Whether a rush is possible depends on the design, the stones, and the current schedule, so it is something we confirm with you rather than promise in advance. If you have a fixed date, mention it at your first consultation so we can tell you honestly what is realistic. A simpler design or readily available stones can sometimes make a tight date possible.
How to plan around a date
- Start early. Because most pieces take 30–90 days, the earlier you begin, the more room you have for design changes without pressure.
- Tell us the date up front. We can plan the design and decisions around it.
- Bring references. Photos, sketches, and examples help the design stage move faster.
- Be ready to review. Prompt feedback on your CAD design keeps things moving.
Worth the wait
