The design

Seen head-on, the piece takes the shape of an open eye. Baguettes fan outward on either side of a stone-set spiral. Follow that spiral inward and a small, gold-toned face comes into view.

Turn the ring slightly and you can see the space between the face and the stones. That narrow distance is where the Watcher lives.

The story

The first line crossed his face so slowly he could follow it with his eyes. Then it curled back.

He remembered standing at the mirror as a boy, touching the cold fleck beneath his jaw. He remembered, years later, someone taking that same chrome hand and telling him, ‘I wish I could be like you.’ What stayed with him was how carefully he had polished it afterward.

Another line crossed the first. He tried to look beyond them. The harder he focused, the faster they turned.

From the outside, the Swirl was beautiful. From where he hung, it filled his entire view.
